Restitutions Committee Chair Appointed

Jacob Kohnstamm has been appointed Chair of the Advisory Committee on the Assessment of Restitution Applications for Items of Cultural Value and the Second World War (the Restitutions Committee). Ingrid van Engelshoven, Minister of Education, Culture and Science, made the decision. The appointment, which took effect on 28 September 2021, is for a period of three years, with the option to renew once.

Bronze candelabrum and situla back to heirs of Vita Israël

THE HAGUE, 27 July 2020 - In a binding opinion issued on 13 July 2020 the Restitutions Committee decided that Rotterdam City Council should restitute a bronze candelabrum and a bronze situla to the heirs of the Jewish pharmacist Emanuel Vita Israël (1873-1940).

Fourteen Items from Meissen Service Back to Heirs of Jewish Owner

THE HAGUE, 6 January 2020 - The Restitutions Committee has advised Minister of Education, Culture and Science to restitute fourteen items from a Meissen service to the heirs of the original German owner Herbert Gutmann. The Minister has accepted this advice.

107 Groups of Meissen Porcelain Items Back to Heirs of Jewish Owner

THE HAGUE, 23 December 2019 - The Restitutions Committee has advised the Minister of Education, Culture and Science to restitute 107 groups of Meissen porcelain items to the heirs of the original German owner Franz Oppenheimer. The Minister has accepted this advice.

Binding Opinion About the Painting Mountainous Landscape by Jacob van Geel

THE HAGUE, 28 November 2019 - The Restitutions Committee has issued a binding opinion about the application for restitution of the painting Mountainous Landscape by Jacob van Geel, currently in the possession of Rotterdam City Council. The Committee takes the view that the City Council is not obliged to restitute the work.

Max Liebermann Drawing Back to Rightful Owners

THE HAGUE, 28 May 2019 - In a binding opinion issued on 16 April 2019 the Restitutions Committee decided that Amsterdam City Archives should restitute the drawing Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam by Max Liebermann to the heirs of the original owners.
